How to make a cut list for woodworking

A cut list is the bridge between a drawing and a stack of accurately sized parts. Done well, it means you buy the right amount of material, make every cut once, and spend your shop time building instead of recalculating. Done badly — or skipped — it's how a $90 sheet of birch plywood becomes scrap.

This guide covers what belongs on a cut list, how to organize it, and the habits experienced builders use to keep mistakes off the saw.

What a cut list includes

At minimum, every part on a cut list needs five things:

A good cut list also carries the plan for where each part comes from: which sheet or board, and in what order the cuts happen. That second half — the cutting diagram — is where most hand-made cut lists stop short, and it's the part a cut list calculator automates.

Step 1: Work from finished dimensions backward

Start with the finished size of the piece — the cabinet's overall height, width, and depth — and derive part sizes from it. A 36″ base cabinet with ¾″ sides doesn't have a 36″ bottom; it has a 34½″ one. Every joint you choose (butt, dado, rabbet, pocket screw) changes the math slightly, so decide joinery before you size parts, not after.

This derivation step is where most cut list errors are born: one forgotten material thickness, repeated across four parts. Cutlist's cabinet builder does the arithmetic from your overall dimensions and joinery choices, so the derived sizes are consistent by construction.

Step 2: Group parts by material and thickness

Sort the list so every part sharing a material and thickness sits together. You'll cut all the ¾″ plywood parts in one session, and the grouping makes it obvious how many sheets you need. It also surfaces cheap substitutions early — that drawer bottom probably doesn't need to be birch.

Step 3: Lay parts onto sheets and boards

Now nest the parts onto the stock you'll actually buy. Three rules matter:

  1. Account for the kerf. Every cut removes a blade's width of material — typically ⅛″. Four 12″ strips do not come out of a 48″ panel. If this is new to you, read our short guide to saw kerf.
  2. Respect grain direction. A part that must show vertical grain can't be rotated 90° just because it fits better that way.
  3. Prefer big offcuts over small ones. Two layouts can have equal waste area, but the one that leaves a single large offcut leaves you usable stock; confetti does not.

Step 4: Order the cuts

A cutting diagram tells you where parts sit; a cut sequence tells you how to get there. The working rule is to cut big to small: break the full sheet into manageable sections first, then bring each section to final size. On a table saw this also keeps you from wrestling a full 4×8 sheet through a narrow rip.

Write the sequence down — or use a tool that generates it — so that at the saw you're following instructions, not solving geometry with the blade spinning.
